【SEMINAR】The Oneness of Zen and Yoga

Yoga traces its roots to ancient India. In Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra, the eightfold path is called ashtanga, and its seventh path is dhyāna (meditation). The word dhyāna was originally transliterated with Chinese: 禪那(chánnà) or禪(chán) in China. The term Zen is derived from it and spread all over Japan afterwards. The physical aspect of yoga was developed as a vehicle for meditation.

In this session, I will talk about my experience of Zazen practice in a Zen Buddhist seminary and the relationship between Yoga asanas and meditation. At the same time, I will try to organize this Yoga session will offer you joyful moments with secured feelings. This session is suitable for biginners.
Crystal bowl sounds lead us to the deep relaxation. We hope the experience of Zen and Yoga at one of the oldest Zen training monastery in Japan will give you an insight into your true self.

【EXPERIENCE SESSION 4】Morning Yoga ~ Sun Salutation and Meditation ~

Sun salutations, which are a series of movements for muscles of whole your body synchronized with breath, lead you a vivid start of a new day. They improve circulation, clear fatigue feeling from you, lengthen all major muscles, deepen your breath, enhance the work of your internal organs, and increase your concentration.

The sun symbolized a good health and a long life in the ancient period of time because the sun is the source of all life on the planet. As sun salutations are performed celebrating the sun, you celebrate life in general at the same time. Thus, they are known to revitalize your mind as well as your body.

Sun salutations are easy for beginners to exercise because of their simple consecutive movements of 12 postures.

To exercise sun salutations mean to show gratitude to the sun in the beginning of the day.

I am grateful if this workshop helps you to start a wonderful day with clear mind in the tranquil atmosphere at the temple.

The morning yoga workshop consists of three parts like below.
① 8:00~Sun Salutation (Surya Namaskara)
② 8:15~Sun Salutation (Surya Namaskara)
③ 8:30~8:45 Meditation

In the beginning of ① and ②, try 12 poses of Sun Salutation(Surya Namaskara) with instructions from me, a yoga instructor. Then, start practicing them by yourself with your comfortable timing and tempo.
You can join the workshop either from the beginning or from the middle parts of the session(② or ③). It is totally up to you.

* An open class. You need not book in advance.
* Suitable for beginners and those with some experience.
* Bring your own drink and towel.
Yoga mats will be prepared at the site, but you can bring your own mat if you wish.
* Wear comfortable clothes suitable for exercise. Changing space will be provided.
* The state of empty stomach is essential for effective exercises.
