Introduction to Just Sitting: How to go back to the Buddha’s sitting under a tree

This workshop is intended as an experiential introduction to the practice of shikantaza, or just sitting, which was called “the main gate to Buddha Dharma” by Zen master Dogen. We will explore how to harmonize body/breath/mind through “completely letting go of my body and mind, throwing them into the house of the Buddha, being taken care of from the side of the Buddha, and fully following it.” The practice of sitting such as this means to go back the radicality of the Buddha’s sitting under a tree after his renunciation of meditation and ascetic practice as human effort. I hope to discuss with participants about the significance of this type of sitting practice sometimes called “returning home and sitting peacefully.”
